PIA Board Approves Leasing of Five Boeing Aircraft for Europe and UK Operations

The board of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has approved plans to lease five Boeing aircraft as the national airline prepares to support and strengthen its operations in European and United Kingdom markets.

The decision includes two Boeing 777 aircraft that PIA will take on a six-month wet lease from European airline Norse Atlantic. Under a wet lease arrangement, the aircraft are generally provided with operational support, including crew and other services.

In addition to the two Boeing 777s, the PIA board has approved the acquisition of three more aircraft through dry lease arrangements. The move will allow the airline to increase its available fleet as it manages its operational requirements.

The aircraft leasing plan comes as PIA works to maintain sufficient capacity for its international operations. Additional aircraft can provide the airline with greater flexibility in managing routes, schedules and aircraft availability.

The board also instructed PIA management to accelerate the procurement of spare parts for its existing aircraft. The availability of essential components is important for maintaining aircraft and ensuring that planes can return to service without unnecessary delays.

During the meeting, PIA’s financial and operational matters were also reviewed. Other issues concerning the airline’s activities and ongoing requirements were discussed at the meeting held at PIA’s head office in Islamabad.

The approval of both wet and dry lease arrangements gives PIA different options for expanding its operational capacity. The six-month wet lease for the two Boeing 777 aircraft is expected to provide temporary capacity, while the three dry-leased aircraft will add further aircraft to the airline’s fleet under a different leasing structure.

PIA’s ability to operate international routes depends heavily on aircraft availability and maintenance readiness. The board’s direction regarding spare parts therefore forms an important part of the broader effort to improve fleet utilization.

The leasing decision also comes as PIA continues efforts to strengthen its international operations. Europe and the United Kingdom are important markets for the airline, particularly for travel between Pakistan and destinations with significant passenger demand.
