The government of Punjab has intensified its efforts to curb air pollution by deploying advanced surveillance systems to monitor vehicle emissions. Authorities are now issuing electronic fines to vehicles found emitting excessive smoke, marking a significant step toward stricter environmental enforcement.

The initiative is being carried out through the Safe Cities Authority, which is being used to identify violators in real time. A dedicated monitoring desk established by the Environmental Protection Agency is overseeing the process, ensuring that emission standards are enforced more effectively.

Officials revealed that during the current month alone, action has been taken against 211 vehicles. The penalties imposed have exceeded Rs. 1 million, reflecting the scale of enforcement and the seriousness of the violations.

Ali Ejaz, Deputy Director of the EPA in Lahore, noted that while pollution persists during the summer season, its visible impact appears reduced due to changing weather conditions. However, authorities stress that emission control remains essential year-round.

The use of surveillance technology for environmental monitoring highlights a shift toward data-driven governance. By leveraging digital tools, regulators aim to improve compliance and discourage practices that contribute to air pollution.

This move is part of broader efforts to tackle urban air quality challenges in major cities. With stricter monitoring and automated enforcement, authorities hope to promote cleaner transportation and raise awareness about the environmental impact of vehicle emissions.
