Pakistan Airports Go Fully Cashless in Major Digital Overhaul

First phase targets major hubs: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad

Pakistan is taking a major leap toward a digitally empowered economy, as the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) has announced a complete transition to cashless systems across all airports nationwide.

The move marks a significant milestone in the country’s Digital Pakistan initiative, aiming to promote secure, transparent, and efficient transactions for both passengers and airport staff.

Under the plan, passengers will soon be able to make payments for all airport services — including retail outlets, dining areas, parking, and lounges — via QR code–based digital systems, eliminating the need for physical cash.

First Phase Targets Major Airports

In collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the PAA will implement the first phase of the project at Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad airports. Once successfully rolled out, the second phase will extend the cashless model to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot airports.

All airport vendors, service providers, and retail partners have been instructed to adopt digital payment platforms, ensuring full compliance with new national guidelines.

Officials said this transformation aligns Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure with global standards of transparency and efficiency, enhancing the overall passenger experience while reducing the risks associated with cash handling.

Improving Efficiency, Transparency, and Safety

The transition to cashless payments is expected to deliver multiple benefits — from faster service and reduced human error to stronger financial accountability. By eliminating cash transactions, airport management will be able to maintain accurate audit trails and prevent theft or mismanagement.

Passengers will also enjoy greater convenience through contactless payments, a crucial step in maintaining hygiene and safety in high-traffic environments.

A PAA spokesperson said the initiative reflects Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing its aviation and financial infrastructure:

“The goal is to create a seamless, secure, and fully digital airport experience for all travelers. This is part of the broader digital transformation agenda supported by the State Bank of Pakistan.”

Once fully implemented, Pakistan will join a select group of countries offering fully cashless airports, placing the nation at the forefront of aviation innovation in South Asia.
