Key Highlights:
Deadline: January 31, 2025 – Last date to get an M-Tag for free.
Effective Date: February 1, 2025.
Penalty: Vehicles without an M-Tag will face a 25% surcharge.

What Does the Official Notification Say?

The NHA Directorate of Revenue (Finance Wing) issued a statement referencing Section 10(2) vii of the NHA Act 1991, emphasizing the importance of implementing a 100% M-Tag system on all motorways.

The notification reads:

“Vehicles without M-Tag or low balance/cash payments shall pay an additional 25% toll surcharge, with a minimum charge of Rs50, starting February 1, 2025.”

Authorities encourage all motorway users to ensure their M-Tags are active and sufficiently funded to avoid extra costs.

In response to rising air pollution levels, the Punjab government has introduced stricter M-Tag requirements.

Key Changes in M-Tag Policy:
Vehicle owners must present a valid fitness certificate along with registration documents.
Vehicles older than 30 years will be banned from motorways between October and January each year.

Why the Change?
Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 190, exceeding WHO guidelines by over 22 times. The government hopes that these measures will help reduce smog and improve air quality in major cities.
