NDMA Declares Next 72 Hours Critical for Northern Areas

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has declared the next 72 hours critical for several northern areas of Pakistan as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected across mountainous regions.

The National Emergency Operations Centre has warned of a potential flood situation in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Authorities have been directed to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures to reduce the risks to vulnerable communities and infrastructure.

According to the latest NDMA alert, intense rainfall in mountainous areas could result in a rapid increase in water levels in rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs.

The combination of heavy rain and steep mountainous terrain could also increase the possibility of flash floods in vulnerable locations.

Landslides and debris flows are another major concern, particularly in areas where roads, settlements and other infrastructure are exposed to unstable slopes.

Several districts in Gilgit-Baltistan have been identified as areas where sudden flooding could occur. These include Gilgit, Diamer, Ghizer, Hunza, Astore, Skardu and Shigar.

The warning comes as weather conditions in northern Pakistan can change rapidly, particularly in mountainous areas where intense rainfall can quickly increase water levels in local waterways.

Residents living near rivers, streams, nullahs and other vulnerable locations have been urged to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Travellers and communities in mountainous regions may also face disruption if heavy rainfall triggers landslides, flooding or debris flows along roads and other transport routes.

The NDMA’s warning highlights the need for early preparedness as the next 72 hours could bring multiple weather-related hazards across northern parts of the country.

Local administrations and relevant emergency services are expected to maintain vigilance and respond promptly if flooding, landslides or other emergencies develop.
