The Senate Standing Committee on Defence has expressed support for South Air’s proposal to expand its flight operations to northern destinations, opening the door for broader connectivity across Pakistan despite concerns raised by aviation regulators.

The matter was discussed during a recent committee meeting where officials reviewed the airline’s operational plans and its commitments regarding regional air connectivity. Aviation authorities pointed out that South Air had initially received regulatory facilitation and approvals after promising to improve transportation links to underserved areas in southern Pakistan.

Officials argued that the airline’s original mandate focused on enhancing access to remote regions, particularly in southern districts where air travel options remain limited. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that such commitments continue to be fulfilled alongside any expansion plans.

Responding to the concerns, South Air Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mohsin Jamil informed the committee that the airline is currently operating two ATR-72 aircraft through wet-lease arrangements. He also revealed plans to expand the fleet with the addition of another aircraft to support growing operational requirements.

According to the airline, operational challenges have affected some routes in Balochistan. Restrictions related to foreign flight crews have limited the carrier’s ability to maintain services on certain destinations, prompting the airline to utilize available resources on northern routes where operations can be conducted more efficiently.

South Air maintains that expanding to northern Pakistan will not only improve its commercial viability but also contribute to strengthening domestic air connectivity. The northern regions remain among the country’s most popular travel destinations, attracting tourists, business travelers, and local passengers throughout the year.

Members of the Senate committee appeared supportive of the airline’s expansion strategy, recognizing the importance of building a sustainable regional aviation network. The committee highlighted the need for airlines to remain financially viable while continuing to serve the broader transportation needs of the country.

Pakistan’s aviation sector has increasingly focused on improving regional connectivity, particularly to destinations that are difficult to access through road infrastructure. Regional carriers play a key role in linking smaller cities and remote areas with major urban centers.

Industry observers note that expanding air services to northern destinations could help boost tourism, facilitate economic activity, and improve travel options for passengers. However, regulators are expected to continue monitoring whether South Air maintains adequate service commitments to underserved southern regions.

As the airline moves forward with fleet expansion plans, its ability to balance commercial growth with regional connectivity obligations will remain an important factor in shaping its future operations within Pakistan’s domestic aviation market.
