National Information Technology Board has requested Rs. 208 million in funding for the upcoming fiscal year 2026-27 to advance its Smart Islamabad Initiative, a project designed to modernize urban management through technology-driven solutions.
The initiative, being implemented under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, focuses on deploying an integrated traffic monitoring and data management system aimed at improving governance, security, and public service delivery in the federal capital.
With a total project cost estimated at Rs. 708.384 million, the 24-month initiative has already achieved around 20 percent physical progress. However, officials noted that no financial expenditure has been recorded so far, raising questions about funding timelines and budget allocation processes.
The Smart Islamabad Initiative is envisioned as a futuristic platform that leverages real-time data integration to enhance traffic flow management, reduce congestion, and strengthen surveillance capabilities. By utilizing advanced analytics and digital infrastructure, the system aims to support smarter decision-making for city administrators.
Experts believe that such projects are crucial for rapidly growing urban centers like Islamabad, where increasing population and vehicle volumes demand more efficient traffic control mechanisms. The initiative could also pave the way for broader smart city developments across Pakistan.
In addition to traffic monitoring, the project is expected to contribute to improved emergency response systems and better coordination between various government departments. The integration of real-time data can help authorities respond more effectively to incidents and ensure smoother urban operations.
Despite the progress on the ground, the absence of recorded financial spending highlights the need for streamlined execution and timely disbursement of funds. Stakeholders emphasize that consistent funding will be essential to keep the project on track and meet its implementation targets.
The funding request now awaits approval as part of the federal budget process. If approved, the additional allocation will enable NITB to accelerate development and move closer to completing one of Pakistan’s key digital governance initiatives.
