The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced plans to introduce a new train service in the Peshawar Valley in collaboration with the federal government. The proposed project, titled the Peshawar Valley Railway, aims to enhance regional connectivity and provide an efficient public transportation option for residents.
According to official documents, the provincial authorities have initiated discussions with Pakistan Railways to move forward with the project. In this regard, the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has written to the Secretary and Chairman of Pakistan Railways outlining the provincial government’s proposal.
The letter highlights the provincial government’s intention to operate railcars and diesel multiple units (DMUs) using the existing railway infrastructure within the Peshawar Valley region. By utilizing already available railway tracks, authorities aim to reduce project costs while improving transportation services in the area.
The planned Peshawar Valley Railway is expected to serve as a modern commuter rail system designed to support daily travel for residents of Peshawar and surrounding districts. The service would potentially ease traffic congestion on major roads while offering a reliable and environmentally efficient transportation alternative.
Officials have confirmed that preliminary groundwork for the project has already begun. The provincial government has initiated the pre-feasibility study phase, which will assess the technical, operational, and financial aspects of the proposed railway service.
The study will evaluate passenger demand, infrastructure requirements, operational costs, and potential routes within the valley. This assessment will help determine the most practical model for launching the commuter rail system and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Transport experts believe that introducing a rail-based transit system in the Peshawar Valley could significantly improve urban mobility across the region. Efficient public transportation is increasingly important as the population of Peshawar and nearby urban centers continues to grow.
Collaboration between the provincial government and Pakistan Railways will be crucial for the project’s implementation. The federal railway authority manages the country’s rail infrastructure, making coordination essential for upgrading tracks, scheduling services, and integrating new trains into the national network.
If approved and implemented successfully, the Peshawar Valley Railway could become a major step toward modernizing public transportation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The initiative also reflects growing efforts by provincial authorities to invest in sustainable and efficient transport systems.
