Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed Pakistan Railways to speed up its modernization drive, emphasizing the need to upgrade the national rail network with global standards in mind. During a high-level briefing, the prime minister instructed the department to bring in international legal and economic experts to support major projects designed to strengthen Pakistan’s regional connectivity.

The prime minister highlighted that a modern railway system is a backbone of any stable economy. He noted that improving transport efficiency directly contributes to trade, mobility, and long-term economic resilience. According to him, Pakistan’s rail infrastructure must evolve rapidly to match the pace of regional development and emerging global requirements.

During the presentation, officials shared that Pakistan Railways is moving forward with its digital transformation strategy. One of the most notable steps in this plan is the provision of free Wi-Fi at 48 railway stations across the country within the year. This initiative aims to improve passenger experience, enable easier access to digital services, and support real-time travel information for commuters.

The introduction of free Wi-Fi aligns with Pakistan Railways’ broader effort to integrate technology into its operations. Officials noted that enhanced digital connectivity will support ticketing systems, communication networks, and security monitoring. It also aims to facilitate passengers who rely on online services for travel planning, work, and communication while on the move.

The government is also pushing for reforms that ensure long-term sustainability of the railway network. This includes exploring new investment models, modernizing signaling systems, and strengthening partnerships with regional countries. The goal, according to officials, is to position Pakistan Railways as a competitive and reliable transport system that supports economic corridors and trade routes.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that no country can progress without a strong and efficient rail system. He urged all departments to collaborate, accelerate ongoing upgrades, and utilize international expertise where needed. With modernization efforts gaining momentum, the introduction of free Wi-Fi marks a visible step toward a more digitally empowered railway network.
