The Sindh government has announced that double-decker buses will officially begin operating in Karachi next month, offering residents a fresh and much-needed upgrade to public transport services.
Expansion of the Peoples Bus Service
Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed on Monday that the buses are part of ongoing expansion efforts under the Peoples Bus Service (PBS). The PBS program has already introduced the Pink Bus service and is now preparing to roll out the Pink Taxi service to address the transportation needs of women specifically.
“Providing reliable and safe travel options is a priority,” stated Memon. “We’ve taken significant steps to transform Karachi’s public transport system.”
New Arrivals and Key Details
According to transport department sources, the first shipment of buses will include five double-decker and 34 electric buses. They are expected to arrive in June, with an additional 100 buses set to be introduced later in the month.
The move is part of a strategic push to alleviate congestion and modernize the city’s transport fleet. Double-decker buses, known for their higher capacity, will help reduce the burden on existing services and offer an attractive alternative to crowded minibuses.
Addressing Long-Standing Commuter Concerns
For years, Karachi’s commuters have grappled with unreliable schedules and inadequate services. The introduction of these buses is expected to make a significant difference by providing a reliable and efficient alternative for citywide travel.
Inclusivity Through the Pink Taxi Service
In a nod to inclusivity and safety, the upcoming Pink Taxi service will cater exclusively to women passengers. This service aims to create a more welcoming transport environment for women across the city.
The arrival of double-decker buses is set to mark a major milestone in Karachi’s public transport landscape. With clear plans and a commitment to equitable access, officials believe these changes will set a new standard for urban mobility in Pakistan’s largest metropolis.
