Bangladesh Eyes Pakistan’s Abdali SRBMs

Amid escalating tensions with India, Bangladesh has reportedly sought short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) from Pakistan. According to the Indian Defence Research Wing (IDRW), the request centers around Pakistan’s Abdali SRBM, a missile with a 400-kilometer range.

This move is seen as a strategic effort by Bangladesh to bolster its defenses against a potential conflict with its neighboring rival, India. The Abdali SRBM, also known as Hatf-II, is designed for rapid deployment, providing significant advantages in short-range engagements.

Pakistan’s Strategic Considerations

Reports suggest that Pakistan is inclined to agree to Bangladesh’s request for two primary reasons. First, supporting Bangladesh could enhance Pakistan’s regional influence, particularly during a period of strained relations between Dhaka and New Delhi. Second, the Abdali’s range ensures no direct threat to Pakistan, making the transaction politically viable.

Regional Implications

If the deal materializes, it could heighten security concerns in South Asia. The Abdali missile’s range makes it capable of striking critical targets in India’s northeastern regions, a point that has not gone unnoticed by defense analysts.

Challenges Under International Arms Control

However, the transfer may face hurdles under international frameworks like the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). Although neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh is a member, compliance with such norms could influence the outcome of this potential deal.

A New Dynamic in Regional Power Balance

Bangladesh’s move to seek advanced missile systems highlights shifting dynamics in South Asia’s security landscape. With the Abdali SRBM offering tactical and operational advantages, this development could reshape defense strategies across the region.
