More Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in Gwadar and Kech, Balochistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office) has issued a warning for more rainfall and potential thunderstorms in the Gwadar and Kech districts of Balochistan. This new weather system follows a recent period of devastating rains that caused significant damage in the region.

While most of Balochistan will experience cold and dry weather, the northern areas of the province are bracing for intense cold. In Kalat, the coldest district, the temperature has already dropped to -5 degrees Celsius. Conditions are slightly milder in Quetta, with a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius.

Here’s a temperature breakdown for other areas in Balochistan:

  • Sibi: 8 degrees Celsius
  • Nokundi: 9 degrees Celsius
  • Turbat: 15 degrees Celsius
  • Jiwani and Gwadar: 11 degrees Celsius

The recent heavy rains caused widespread disruption in Gwadar, Kech, and other areas of Balochistan. Normal life has been severely impacted, and traffic on the Coastal Highway has been halted. A state of emergency has been declared in affected areas of Gwadar, and paramilitary forces are assisting with rescue and relief operations.

The coastal district of Gwadar received over 160mm of rainfall within a short 12-hour period. Floodwaters inundated homes, businesses, and roads in Gwadar town. Tragically, a portion of the coastal highway connecting Gwadar port with Karachi and other areas has been washed away.

The coastal town of Jiwani has also been severely impacted, with three dams breaking and boats swept out to sea.
