Balochistan Launches Urgent Polio Vaccination Campaign

Beginning tomorrow (Monday), Balochistan province will embark on a crucial week-long polio vaccination drive. The aim is to protect over 2.655 million children throughout the region in the fight against this preventable disease. Alongside polio drops, children will also receive Vitamin A supplements to boost their health.

Progress and Renewed Concerns

It’s encouraging to note that Balochistan has not reported a polio case since 2021. However, the recent discovery of poliovirus in sewage samples from the Lasbela district in January 2023 serves as a stark reminder of the continued risk. Analysis of the virus traces its origin back to Gadap, Karachi.

This discovery isn’t an isolated incident. Last month, poliovirus was found in environmental samples across nine Pakistani districts. These findings prompted a nationwide anti-polio campaign in January, aiming to vaccinate over 40 million children under five years old.

The Fight Continues

Polio is a highly infectious disease that can lead to lifelong paralysis or even death. Thanks to global vaccination efforts, the world is close to eradicating this threat. Yet, until polio is completely gone, all children remain at risk.

Pakistan, including the Balochistan region, remains committed to eradicating polio. Let’s support this crucial campaign and ensure that every child has the opportunity to live a polio-free life. Vaccinating your children is the single most important step to protect them and others.
