Skywatchers across Pakistan are in for a celestial treat as the brightest and closest Supermoon of 2025—known as the “Beaver Moon”—lights up the night sky on November 4 and 5 (Tuesday and Wednesday).

The event will mark the largest and most luminous full moon of the year, offering astronomy enthusiasts two consecutive nights to witness its brilliance in all its glory.

Origin of the ‘Beaver Moon’

The name Beaver Moon dates back to Native American and early colonial traditions, referring to the time when trappers set beaver traps before winter froze rivers and wetlands.

This particular full moon will appear bigger and brighter because the Moon will reach its closest point to Earth in orbit—about 221,817 miles away. That’s nearly 2,800 miles closer than October’s full moon, giving it a noticeably larger appearance to the naked eye.

What Makes This Supermoon Special

According to NASA, the Moon’s physical size remains the same, but its apparent size increases due to proximity. When the Moon is at its nearest point to Earth, it can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it’s at its farthest distance.

Adding even more excitement, the Taurid meteor showers will also be visible during this period, sending occasional bright, slow-moving fireballs streaking across the night sky.

Meteor expert Robert Lunsford explained that while November won’t see major meteor activity, the Northern and Southern Taurids, along with the Leonids, will offer stunning visuals for casual stargazers and astrophotographers alike.

The ideal time to catch the Super Beaver Moon will be at moonrise on Tuesday evening (November 4), with another opportunity to view it the following night.

Observers might also experience the “Moon Illusion”—a natural optical phenomenon that makes the Moon appear unusually large when near the horizon, especially when viewed alongside trees, buildings, or mountains.

For the best view, astronomy experts recommend heading to a dark, open location with a clear eastern horizon and minimal light pollution. Rural areas and elevated spots away from city glare will offer the clearest views.
