Economic Coordination Committee’s Strategic Approval

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, has approved a significant allocation of Rs. 2 billion to combat fake news campaigns. These efforts aim to safeguard state institutions from politically driven disinformation.

  • Ministry of Defence: Receives Rs. 1.945 billion to counter propaganda.
  • Technology Upgrades: Rs. 1.22 billion allocated to equip ISPR with advanced tools.
  • Cybersecurity Investments: Rs. 723 million set aside to enhance digital security infrastructure.

ISPR’s Central Role

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has been at the forefront of combating false narratives. With this funding, ISPR will undergo technological upgrades to address sophisticated disinformation methods. Army Chief General Asim Munir has emphasized the necessity of these measures to hold propagandists accountable and ensure national integrity.

Future-Proofing the Fight Against Fake News

In addition to immediate measures, the government has earmarked Rs. 1.6 billion annually for sustained efforts. This inclusion in the next fiscal year’s budget highlights the long-term importance of combating misinformation.
