The Pakistani government has announced the minimum amount of money that will trigger an automatic zakat deduction from eligible bank accounts during Ramadan. This threshold is known as the Nisab-i-Zakat.

Here’s what you need to know about Zakat:

  • The Threshold: For Ramadan 2024, the Nisab-i-Zakat is Rs. 135,179.
  • How it Works: If you have more than this amount in your savings account (or similar accounts), the bank will deduct 2.5% as zakat.
  • Who is Exempt: Accounts holding less than Rs. 135,179 will not have zakat deducted.
  • When Does it Happen: The deduction will occur on the first day of Ramadan, expected to be March 12th (but always dependent on the moon sighting).

Understanding Zakat

Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam. It’s a form of charitable giving where Muslims with sufficient wealth donate a portion to support those in need. This practice promotes social justice and helps build a more compassionate community.
