Vietnam’s Strategic Plan to Boost Tourism with Visa-Free Entry

Vietnam is poised to enhance its tourism sector by waiving visa requirements for citizens from several countries. This initiative, led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, aims to streamline the visa process, making Vietnam a more attractive destination for international travelers and boosting the country’s tourism recovery.

Simplifying Visa Policies

Prime Minister Chinh has directed the ministries of public security and foreign affairs to explore visa waivers for multiple countries. In a recent meeting with Vietnamese representatives abroad, he emphasized the need for easier visa processes to create significant momentum for the tourism industry.

“The Ministry of Public Security should cooperate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to waive visas for several countries,” Chinh stated. This strategic move is part of Vietnam’s broader goal to enhance its competitiveness in the global tourism market.

Southeast Asia’s Visa Policies

Currently, Vietnam offers visa exemptions to travelers from 25 countries. This is relatively modest compared to other Southeast Asian nations. Malaysia and Singapore offer visa waivers to 162 countries, the Philippines to 157, and Thailand to 93. Thailand recently expanded its visa-free stay from 57 to 93 countries and territories, and Indonesia plans to introduce visa-free visits to 20 new destinations, including Australia, China, and India, by October.

Vietnam’s Visa Landscape

Vietnam currently provides a three-month tourist visa for citizens from all countries and territories. Since August 2023, the government has increased the visa-free stay duration to 45 days for citizens of 13 specific countries. This exemption includes popular tourist destinations such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea, and several Nordic nations.

Reinvigorating Vietnam’s Tourism

Vietnam has seen a significant increase in international arrivals, with 8.8 million visitors in the first half of 2024. However, this figure is still 4% lower than pre-pandemic levels. The government has set an ambitious target to attract 18 million international visitors by the end of the year.

Upcoming Visa Waivers

The specific countries targeted for potential visa waivers have not yet been disclosed. This move signifies Vietnam’s proactive approach to attracting foreign tourists and revitalizing its crucial tourism sector. The results of the investigation by the Ministries of Public Security and Foreign Affairs are highly anticipated by travel enthusiasts and tourism industry stakeholders alike.
